Mobility aids for the blind.
نویسنده
چکیده
1. Next to restoring vision, or a modicum of vision, an ideal mobility device is desired. It should be able to give the user data on his location, orientation, routes, compass courses, obstacles, etc. 2. Increase the awareness among consumers and professionals alike of the availability of new devices such as the Laser Typhlocane, Binaural Sensory Aid, and Lindsay Russell Pathsounder. 3. Improve public information and public relations activities regarding VA's blind rehabilitation programs. 4. Develop selection and prescription criteria to aid in reaching the best solution to the mobility problems of each blinded person. 5. Obtain a better understanding of the influences of other disabilities a blind person may have on the mobility means of choice, and the performance to be expected. It has been estimated that only 10 percent of blinded veterans are free of some other significant disability. 6. Increase the number of blinded veterans who receive orientation and mobility (O&M) training at a VA blind rehabilitation center (BRC) or equivalent activity .

This technical report describes ongoing research into the development of a robotic mobility aid (PAM-AID) for people with a visually impairment who also require support during walking. These disabilities coincide most often in the elderly and as the elderly constitute almost two thirds of all blind people (due to the fact that blindness occurs most often in the over 65's) we feel that this atte...

As a consequence they have little opportunity to take exercise without assistance from a carer. The combination of visual and mobility impairments occurs most often among the elderly. In this paper we examine the issues related to mobility for the blind and pay particular atten...
